Great Eastern deadlock remainsBy Rajesh Kumar, Section Development
KOLKATA, March 28. -- Despite chief minister Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's claim that the DFID-sanctioned amount for the Great Eastern Hotel ERS would not go unused, no solution to the deadlock emerged from the government headquarters today.
The government is yet to receive any application for ERS, though the deadline expired on 26 March. The state, as per its agreement with the Centre, would not be able to draw from the allotted Rs 16 crore for the proposed ERS after 31 March. With the tourism minister, Mr Dinesh Dakua, absent at the Writers' today, no formal meeting was held by the department to settle the issue or even take a decision on approaching the donor agency for an extension of deadline on grounds that a "section of employees were being discouraged by the union from accepting the offer". Industries minister, Mr Nirupam Sen, however insisted: "There is no chance that the government would retreat from its course of the hotel's strategic transfer." He also ruled out possibilities of further negotiations with the unions.
State tourism secretary, Mr Tapan Burman, said: "I have had routine and informal talks with the hotel's member-secretary Mr Basudeb Bag and the tourism director Mr Mihir Sen. There is no development worth reporting." On the anonymous letter which stated about the "intimidation by the unions", Mr Burman said: "There is no basis for such an allegation. The member secretary has received no such complaint." Mayor and Intuc leader, Mr Subrata Mukherjee said he urged the chief minister to draw up a framework to protect the "employees' interests" during the transfer but added he wasn't convinced with Mr Bhattacharjee's response.
