State has immense untapped potential: PranabBy Rajesh Kumar, Section Development
KOLKATA, March 28. -- The state government should strive to make Kolkata a "knowledge engine" of the nation by leveraging the "untapped potential in the knowledge sector." This was the essence of the Defence minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee's address to the 77th annual general meeting of the Indian Chamber of Commerce today.
Mr Mukherjee said the Eastern region, especially West Bengal, "has immense untapped potential in the knowledge sector". "We should be able to attract global investment in research and development with a vast pool of qualified, English speaking, scientific and technological manpower", he said. While speaking on globalisation, Mr Mukherjee said that globalisation has to be a "positive sum game and not a zero-sum game." He said economic liberalisation since 1990s have made global environment more conducive to India's economic development. He said globalisation is both an opportunity and a challenge. The Defence minister, however, said, South Asia has been slow to recognise the win-win aspect of economic cooperation. He said India has a set of bilateral relationships on both the political and economic aspects with its neighbours. He said mere lowering of tariffs and pruning of negative lists are not enough for bilateral ties. Greater connectivity, both in transport and communication can transform the sub-continent into a web of economic and commercial links.
Mr Anup Singh, ICC president, said employment, poverty alleviation and economic security can only take place with a scorching double digit growth.
