Cricket vs the battle of all palates in KolkataBy Rajesh Kumar, Section Sports & Fun
It's seafood for Sachin Tendulkar and biryani for Sourav Ganguly. As India and Pakistan gear up for the great battle at Eden, chefs of the host hotel are busy rustling up Chinese and Indian delicacies for the players.
Tandoor food and spicy Chinese cuisine have scored with the Pakistani cricketers. "Both the teams have shown interest in our Chinese fare and the kebabs we serve. On Monday night, some members of the Pakistani team tried lobsters in Szechwan sauce, prawns, hakka noodles and steamed rice," said Surinder Singh, executive chef of Taj Bengal. While most of the players ate at Chinoserie, the speciality Chinese restaurant, Chinoserie, some ordered through room service. The Indian players seem to favour Indian food. "Most of them ate in their rooms and ordered Indian fare. Kadai murgh, daal and egg curry have been the most ordered dishes," Singh said. For the main course, naan, steamed rice and vegetable pulao were the favourites.
"Both the teams have expressed their delight at kebabs like zafrani lobster, murg gilafi sheekh, murgh angare kebab and murgh sina bhatti, most of which have been planned especially for the tour. Some of the Pakistani team members even expressed their desire to try out more dishes at Sonargaon, our Indian restaurant," Singh said.
Ganguly is known for his prejudice for dum biriyani. "When he is in the hotel, he usually eats with his teammates. But he orders room service and rarely comes to a restaurant," said a hotel official. The skipper also relishes his maachher jhol--bhaat and sometimes has home-cooked food sent to the hotel. Tendulkar is an exception in Team India as far his palate goes. "Sachin is a great lover of Chinese food and prefers sea fish in different Chinese sauces. He also likes meifoon or rice noodles. At times, he likes to experiment with seafood like king crabs," a hotel official said. On the days of the match, the players will have their lunch at the stadium, but eat dinner at the hotel. http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/181_1281760,000600010003.htm
