Sex education will make an entry through the backdoor into Class VI and higher classes from the next academic session, under the ambiguous header "lifestyle education".
The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education will not introduce it as a subject but will let the syllabus be covered in bits and parts of other subjects. Teachers from across the state are being trained on teaching children sensitively the finer points of life such as problems of adolescence, reproduction and sexually transmitted diseases.
"We are trying to work out how to cover the topics under various subjects," said WBSE president Dibyendu Hota. The students though will not have to take exams on what they learnt of "lifestyle education". And the classes too won't be the usual boring ones -- plays, songs, and dance dramas being the instrument of learning. Students would be encouraged to speak their mind.
It will be an interactive teaching lesson not only on sexuality, but also on society, psychology and health. So, a student will learn about self-realisation, self-respect, self-expression and vices like smoking, drinking and drugs.
