No entry for singles at Digha hotels

KOLKATA: Digha, one of Bengal's few retreats by the sea, has something of a shocker for single travellers: they will not get a place to stay in its hotels.

So, the next time you plan a trip to Digha, remember to tag somebody along even if you aren't really fond of him/her.

The sex of your companion does not matter; but not having someone with you in Digha is like standing in front of your room with the key in the sea. Hoteliers, of course, say they are just following the do's and don'ts given by the local police authorities.

One of the latest victims of this strange rule is environmentalist Subrata Roy. He was on a trip to Digha recently to study the effects of plastic on the coastal belts of the state. Roy said he was made to wait for over three hours before one of his associates arrived to unlock the door to his room. "I had booked a room at a state-run hotel over the phone. I had made it clear I would reach Digha at 1 pm on March 10 and my friend would arrive an hour later. When I reached, the staff acknowledged my booking but refused to allot me a room as I was alone," Roy recalled.

The staff refused to budge despite pleas that his friend would arrive any moment. "They said the police had ruled that single boarders were not to be allotted rooms at any hotel. Roy even failed to convince the Digha Development Authority and spent three hours at a restaurant till his companion turned up to rescue him. "We can't do anything as there have been cases of suicides by single boarders.

Nobody wants to take a risk," said a DDA official. Police officials in Digha said the rule was made by a former officer-in-charge. "Allotting rooms to single boarders may lead to trouble. So we have asked hoteliers to be careful," one of them admitted.
