Kolkata's designer villas face demolitionBy Unregistered Visitors, Section Real Estate
The Calcutta High Court has ordered the demolition of 285 newly built designer villas in Kolkata's Rajarhat township as they have been built on wetlands.
While the court order came two months ago, the West Bengal Government passed an ordinance on November 15 declaring the wetlands a no-construction zone. With this a 14-year campaign by environmental activists to save the wetlands has come to an end. Spanning 12,500 hectares on Kolkata's eastern fringe, the wetlands were declared protected by the UN's Ramsar Convention in 2001. click full story for more
Loopholes
But illegal constructions continued, using loopholes in old laws. With the new ordinance in place, hopefully there will be no more illegal constructions. "We had to wait a very long time. We had filed a PIL in the Calcutta High Court in 1991," said Bonani Kakkar, PUBLIC. "But just recently in November this year there was an ordinance passed which will ensure further protection of the wetlands," Kakkar added. The promoters whose properties now face the axe refused to talk to NDTV. According to sources, they will now approach the Supreme Court. Whether these buildings are finally demolished, one will have to wait and see. But the new ordinance should at least protect the wetlands from future attempts to turn Kolkata's kidney into a concrete jungle.
