Kolkata: The 31st Kolkata Book Fair, to be held at the Maidan between January 25 and February 5 next, will see the participation of a large contigent of writers and publishers from Spain and Australia.

While Spain is the focal theme and partner country of the Book Fair -- the largest in the world, Australia will be the guest of honour.

Besides these, the Fair will witness the first-ever participation of Mexico, Venezuela and Ireland as well as the return of the US after a long gap, Tridib Kumar Chatterjee, General Secretary of Publishers and Booksellers Guild -- the promoter of the Book Fair -- said.

A Spanish film festival will also be held simultaneously at Nandan, the venue of the Kolkata Film Festival, he added.

Besides Spain and Australia, Britain, France, European Union, Germany, Brazil and Bangladesh will have their own pavillions in the fair, Mr Chatterjee said, adding that the theme pavillion would be a replica of Plaza Mayor, popularly known as Madrid Plaza.

He said the Book Fair would also have an Information Technology Park. ''Various software, suitable for students, publishers and libraries, hardwares and CD of books will be displayed and sold from the IT park,'' he said.

A number of leading IT organisations of the country had already confirmed their participation in the IT Park, he said.

''We expect a 10 per cent growth in the number of visitors and turnover,'' he said. Last year, the book fair had attracted 2.5 million book lovers and the business turnover was to the tune of Rs 20 crore.
