Howrah-Malda Intercity Express looted

KOLKATA: A gang stopped the 3011 Up Howrah-Malda Intercity Express between Ahmedpur and Batashpur stations on Monday evening and went on a looting spree.

Two of the gangsters allegedly held the driver at gunpoint while their associates robbed the passengers. The incident comes on the heels of a train dacoity and rape in Madhya Pradesh and molestation of women passengers by Haryana Police personnel in Assam.

Two men barged into the driver's cabin as the train was pulling away from Ahmedpur at 6.45 pm. They stuck a gun to his forehead and directed him to stop on the way to Batashpur.

The looting continued for nearly 15 minutes while the train remained stalled between the two stations. "When the train stopped, the gang boarded coach 4 and snatched a bag containing over Rs 3 lakh from Burdwan-based businessman Bidyut Saha.

They grabbed ornaments and wallets from other passengers before hopping off the train as it slowed down while entering Batashpur station," said Birbhum SP Sanjay Singh....

An FIR was lodged at Sainthia station. While ER officials said the train was to be escorted by the Government Railway Police, state police sources said the cops were to board at Rampurhat.

"We normally provide night escort to the train between Rampurhat and Malda. We had no idea the miscreants would strike so early in the evening," officials said.
