Pak terror cuts through Bengal

KOLKATA: Two arrests in Dhanirampur, Murshidabad, last month have again confirmed that West Bengal is becoming a soft target for Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence.

Both Hilal Sheikh and Nafiqul Biswas were trained to trigger blasts using timers and remote controls. With their arrest, Delhi Police claim to have foiled a plan to kill leading Andhra Pradesh politicians using human bombs and target software parks in Hyderabad and Bangalore as well as marketplaces and railway stations in north India.

Hilal, produced before the media in New Delhi on Monday, is a member of Bangladeshbased Harkat-ul-Jihadi Islami (Huji). He had sneaked into India several times in the last six months, each time carrying around 20-25 kg of RDX.

He had a role in the fidayeen attack at the Special Task Force office at Begumpet, Hyderabad, on October 12.

Dhanirampur-based Nafiqul had been working as a tout for two years until he found it more lucrative to smuggle ISI agents across the border. ...

Hilal was staying in his house when police picked up them up. Interrogation of the duo led to raids across the country and the arrest of another Harkat member, Mohammed Ibrahim, who was the first to come to Hyderabad (in August) to set up a base there.

He was supposed to go back to Kolkata and bring Hilal to Andhra's IT hub to carry out subversive activities. The plan failed because of Hilal's arrest.

Ibrahim -- produced before the media in Delhi along with Hilal -- was yet another of the terrorists Nafiqul had smuggled in via Murshidabad and escorted to Hyderabad.

Police investigations have revealed that the terror plot was masterminded by Hyderabad native Ghulam Yezdani alias Naved, who is suspected to be involved in Gujarat BJP leader Haren Pandya's murder.

Shaheed, another man smuggled in by Nafiqul, visited Pakistan in April using a Bangladeshi passport and underwent 21 days' training along with five of his compatriots.

ISI agents and Pakistan Army officials used the three weeks instigating them to carry out attacks against sensitive installations in India. While the five returned to Bangladesh, Shaheed proceeded to India.
