Celebrate, for Dada is on flight to Pak

KOLKATA: Christmas came to Kolkata a day early. Around 1.10 pm, when news arrived that Sourav Ganguly would be boarding the flight to Lahore in 12 days' time, the anxious wait was broken by unbridled joy.

Fans gathered since early morning in front of Ganguly's Biren Roy Road residence, smeared one another with abir and distributed sweets.

Processions came out, crackers burst and slogans rent the air as the city and its suburbs made their joy known.

"He'll get three tons in three Tests; Chappell will soon know what Sourav is all about," someone shouted, summing up the mood.

The fans may be super-confident, but the man himself did not let himself go with the flow. "Like any other player, I'm happy... It's good to be back after being dropped for the Ahmedabad Test," Ganguly said. Is this more significant than his 1996 comeback? He let that one through.

There were indications that Ganguly would be on the Pakistan-bound squad, but he was not ready to believe it till the official announcement. With the crowd in front of his residence swelling by the minute, the pressure built.

He checked into a five-star hotel with wife Dona where the two were glued to the TV screen. He emerged after getting the good news. "You look relieved," an associate said. "Relief is fine. Now I have to get runs," he said.

Later, he celebrated Christmas with his family. In this season of giving, he couldn't have asked for a bigger gift.
