Contract in bag, Sourav eyes Pak ride

KOLKATA: If Sourav Ganguly believes in the proverb 'morning shows the day', he has every reason to look forward to Saturday's selection committee meeting in Mumbai.

The feeling of unwantedness which had enveloped him after being cast away by the selectors for the Ahmedabad Test, lifted somewhat on Friday with the BCCI gradation panel retaining him among the elite group of cricketers in the country with a 100% pay hike.

On Saturday, he could well be handed the ticket to Pakistan.

If a shadow of doubt still remains over Ganguly's reinduction into the squad, it's because of the negative vibes from chief selector Kiran More on Friday.

But the fact that the gradation panel includes More and coach Greg Chappell, among others, shows that all is not lost for the Bengal 'Tiger'.

Ganguly would also be reassured by the fact that the list of the chosen ones would require BCCI chief Sharad Pawar's approval before it is announced to the media.

Ganguly's new contract would fetch him Rs 1 crore (up from Rs 50 lakh) in retainership. Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, V V S Laxman and Harbhajan Singh were also similar beneficiaries by holding on to their places in the elite grade, which had a new entrant in Irfan Pathan.

Yuvraj Singh, Mohammed Kaif and Ajit Agarkar too retained their places in Grade B and will get an enhanced fee of Rs 70 lakh (up from Rs 35 lakh). Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the new member here.

Zaheer Khan, tipped to make the trip to Pakistan, dropped from Grade B to 'C', but will still take home Rs 40 lakh for the season -- along with Murali Kartik and new member Gautam Gambhir.

There was also good news for Chappell and his support staff who have each been given a twoyear contract.

Chappell has also got a substantial pay hike.
