Safe sex lessons, at a school near you

KOLKATA: What an entire department can't do, an enterprising individual can. The school education department still hasn't managed to start sex education classes, but Govind Kumar Sharma, a 42-year-old trader from Howrah, is all set to begin his own institute for sex education.

Sharma is armed with a KMC licence. His sex education school for adults on 97/2 Hazra Road will have a closed-circuit camera to ensure no "nuisance or mischief" takes place inside.

More than a year ago, Sharma had applied for a similar licence from the previous KMC board. His proposal was dismissed as "controversial".

But current mayor Bikash Bhattacharya says: "How can sex education be taboo in Kamasutra country? I am all for this project.

Doesn't matter if it's a private endeavour." Sharma's school, euphemistically called Lifestyle Institute and comprising two doctors, two psychologists and three psychoanalysts, is all set for inauguration.

The idea came to him when his daughter Uma, 16, asked him what 'safe sex' meant. "I realised all parents go through this predicament," he said.

The courses will come at a price -- Rs 5000-15,000 depending on the course selected.

But students can hope for placement. And private individuals opting for the various courses in the institute will be charged a one-time Rs 5,000 or Rs 15,000. Sharma said: "Sex education is an evolving subject. We will get placements for all the adults trained at our institute."

The curriculum will include guidelines to prevent AIDS and STDs and ways to fight the decline in socio-cultural values, which has been leading to teen pregnancies and extra-marital affairs.

Sharma is confident his institute will do well. "I've been flooded by queries from school and college-goers since I launched a whisper campaign last September," he signed off.
